a shrublike plant that grows in marshy places. It has pink flowers and a root that is used in medicine to soothe or protect irritated mucous tissues. It belongs to the mallow family.

1. a soft, white, spongy candy, covered with powdered sugar. It is made from corn syrup, sugar, starch, and gelatin. Originally it was made from the root of the marsh mallow.
